Welcome to Likaa el Ared, an ecological farm in Maad Byblos, Lebanon, raising awareness about permaculture and empowering the local community.

Our sustainable practices aim to produce good quality food nurturing ecosystems and solid social links.

LIKAA EL-ARED represents a profound connection to the land, a rediscovery of our roots, a harmonious embrace of the world around us, and a meaningful interaction with others.

Background

The idea of Likaa el Ared takes shape at the end of 2021, within the context of the crisis in Lebanon and the concern over food prices that compromises the food security of the population.

The opportunity of an available piece of land in the mountain of Byblos leads the founding team to the commitment to put it at the service of the community, contributing our bit to heal the planet.

Permabusiness Model

Since 2021 Likaa el Ared’s seed has been growning inward:

Thanks to the Incubation phase of Green Entrepreneurs under SwitchMed II, we developed a green business model and a permaculture design, which, although it still needs to prove its consistency, marks a promising start.

With the support of l’Œuvre d’Orient and the generosity of other private donors, we have built a pond to collect rainwater.

Most importantly, the team and our relationships with other stakeholders, (local residents, similar projects, workers, and freelancers) have been growing and strengthening.

We are at the beginning of a long journey, as nature takes all it’s time, but the idea is already taking root!

Journey

Likaa el Ared aims to produce good quality food, in a sustainable way, producing enough profits to continue generating value in the long term.

The range of products is tailored to the geographical characteristics of the zone (carob molasses, zaatar, sumac, olives, eggs, goat milk derivatives), and intends to innovatively maintain the rich tradition surrounding agro-food that exists in Lebanon.

But Likaa el Ared is not just a farm; it has an educational impact. It aims to adapt the globally accumulated experience in permaculture and other regenerative agriculture schools to the context of the Lebanese mountains, where a rich agricultural heritage exists, creating a symbiosis of the old and new, global and local.
